We are building a castle. Every self respecting castle has a Coat of Arms, right?
If we had a Coat of Arms for the Citadel what would you like to see on it? Now keep in mind the definition of a Coat of Arms according to eHow is:
The use of coats of arms became popular in Europe during the Middle Ages, as a means of identifying individuals and families. Heraldry developed to keep records of the genealogies of families using coats of arms, and many of those genealogies still exist. Today, heraldry is not regulated in most countries, and there are companies
Of course we don't live in the Middle Ages and we can take some artistic license. ;)
So lets hear your thoughts and suggestions. We need to think about what we are (martial endeavor), what we stand for (Liberty).
We need to come up with some different images, and of course a motto.

I'm a fan of medieval history, including heraldry. As noted, a coat of arms was to identify individuals from a distance, across a battlefield. Colors need to stand out to be seen at a distance. Yellow/gold and white/silver were considered "metals", and were placed on colors, or colors placed on them. For example a black/red/blue background with a yellow/gold or white/silver "charge" on it. A charge is the shape of the thing on the coat of arms.
ReplyDeleteSo here's my suggestion to get the comments started. A blue field (background) with a silver/white Liberty bell centered in the field.
Also, the helmet on the top is a jousting/gaming helmet. I'd suggest that a war helmet be used in it's place. Seems more fitting to me!
Carry on folks! This is an exciting proposition!

When you talk of a liberty bell do you mean having it in the center, with other spaces for different charges or only the liberty bell in the center.
DeleteI like the blue/silver color scheme.
What other images (charges)could we put on the coat of arms.
Miss Violet,
DeleteI was thinking of a Liberty Bell by itself, as the only charge. Historically, the "quarterings" were when families married, and they wanted to show the arms of both families. As the families continued to marry into other families with coats of arms, then the heraldry got very "busy".
I like simplicity, be able to see it across the battlefield, be able to see it clearly flying from the ramparts of the Citadel.

I see what you mean Allen. I did not know that about the quartering of the shield. You are right, you should be able to see it clearly.
DeleteUse the liberty Bell as the shield.
DeleteI like the idea of quartering the shield. Four charges each with a meaning. A Bell for liberty, a Tower to represent the strength of the Citadel, an AR crossed with an Arrow to show what we build and that we will fight if necessary, and a Tree to represent our goal of growing liberty for future generations.

Nice. ;)
DeleteI think it should have a balance on it with lady liberty on one side and haven't come up with what should be on the other....
ReplyDeleteMaybe the III symbol on the other...
ReplyDeleteShield supporters - Lady Liberty
ReplyDeleteOrder - III
Charges - "We The People", III arms Logo, ....
One of the banners should be "Rightful Liberty", "Iustus Libertas" is what I came up with on my five minute home schooled Latin study, so dont trust me on that.
Great ideas, all. We can divide the shield however we want, it doesn't have to be quarters, I think I also saw some that had six.
ReplyDeleteI'm casting a "no" vote for including lady liberty in the design, as the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France the the US dedicated in 1886, way the heck after the time of the founders and also well into the time when the country was already sliding down the slippery slope of greedy men using the industrial era to gain more and more power over the people, only to snowball from there. Just my two cents and my reasons, no argument. :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe some noble native Idaho beasts for the supporters?
Scorpions in a bottle would convey both the fierce martial spirit and the self-contained doctrinal purity of the undertaking.
ReplyDeleteI believe the shield should have a large fire-breathing eagle on it. For freedom.
ReplyDeleteDo the shield supporters have to be animalistic? I could see a coat of arms with the shield supporters being two armed men or an armed man and woman. Weapons and clothing could be from any era and slung or otherwise. After all it is the rifleman that defends and supports all of the values that will be represented on the shield.

I have only one suggestion: The Phoenix. If ever there has been an icon for rising from the ashes of something that was consumed in flame, it's Liberty.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the Phoenix upon a shield and nothing more. For is that not the ultimate endeavour of the Citadel, that no matter what befalls us we shall survive to rise from the ashes.
DeleteI as a believer in the one true God and a fellow patriot in this
ReplyDeletecounty would not want to be a part of something with pagan symbols
on it. Research both lady liberty and a phoenix and other things one
might suggest.

Many symbols have been used throughout the ages. Often they are reused with new meaning. For instance, much of the more secular symbolism associated with Christmas was originally pagan and was deliberately used to transition pagan societies into Christianity.
DeleteSince any connection of Lady Liberty to a pagan goddess is unknown to the overwhelming majority of Americans, it is entirely meaningless. The current association is to the ideal of Liberty and that is what matters.
Those factors aren't all that significant compared to the strongly implied level of intolerance in your post. We have at least one self declared Odinist who is interested in our project. If an obscure pagan symbol alone is enough for you to not associate with us, I can't imagine you tolerating living next door to an Odinist.
To be blunt, you don't sound like someone who would even try to live up to the ideal of Rightful Liberty. Forgive me if I have misjudged you on this, but it is important. Anyone who wants to live in the Citadel needs to understand that this is not an empty slogan. We really mean it. Don't even apply if you don't understand and embrace this concept and all it implies.
